Suspense with a powerhouse beginning that pulls you in, following by twists and turns.

One of those I stayed up late to keep flipping chapters to find out what happens.

When her husband Greg goes on a business trip and doesn’t come home, Claire Barnes is shocked. She can’t just sit around and do nothing, so she and her best friend Drew go to Rochester to look for clues. But what she comes away with are more questions and the fact she may not have known her husband at all. For months she lives in a depressed limbo, barely hanging on for her two small children, but she finally starts to live again. Only to have her life shattered once more. Will she have the strength to put Humpty back together again?

Wow. This is a heck of a mystery. Where is Greg? Is he dead? Did he run off? What happened? Then there’s Claire. The story is told from her POV so all we see are her thoughts and views. And I have to admit, I don’t particularly like her much. But she makes for a great character to follow. The pace is decent, but it does tend to drag a little bit in a few areas. However, the mystery of Greg drives the plot forward and the ending is a heap of surprise with whopper of a twist. It’s definitely a story I continue to think about long after I’ve closed the cover.

The Net-Net on Thought I Knew You:
I couldn't put it down. And at the same time, I couldn't find a reason why I should care about or empathize with the main character. How's that for confusing?

If you've been married for more than 5 minutes, you know relationships have their ups-and-downs. Claire and Greg Barnes have been going through an extended down period, so when Greg doesn't return home from a business trip, it's not exactly clear if he's just left his family, been kidnapped or killed. I've been listening to a lot of true crime podcasts lately, so my first thought was, did Claire have something to do with it? Is she just playing the shocked and grieving wife? Did she get rid of Greg to pursue a relationship with someone else?

Sadly, Claire just isn't that colorful or devious. That's not a criticism of how she's written, it's just the character. Most of our lives are too boring to make for good reality TV, and I sort of felt that way about Claire. She's an everyday person whose marriage has gotten stale. Both she and Greg are responsible for where they've gotten to, and even knowing this, I couldn't find a reason to empathize with her.

Really, I wanted to know what happened to Greg! It's the reason to stay with the book. Claire thought she knew him. But did she?
