I remember being surprised by how much I liked The Egoist, especially Meredith’s treatment of gender which framed men as spoiled losers and women as real humans with interior lives, so I thought I’d give another one of his books a go. The Amazing Marriage seems to have an intriguing story, but unfortunately the moments of psychological insight and emotional depth that Meredith is known for are almost entirely overshadowed by needlessly florid prose. Several nature scenes occur early on in the book, and it is as though Meredith tried to write exhaustively about every aspect of the surroundings that he could envision using the largest available words. This tendency, combined with the frequent use of impenetrable metaphors, meant I didn’t make it that far. It’s a shame because the prologue is sooooo good! A disappointing DNF because it’s either very interesting or extremely boring with no in-between and I just couldn’t handle the boring.
