I really dislike the way that this series handles race. I think the author wrote herself into a bit of a corner in terms of religion and race, so she had to work with what she created in the original series, but it still feels a little distasteful. I enjoyed the wide cast of characters, particularly the 1st year recruits, but the plot felt rushed. For a plot with so many moving pieces, it felt overly simplified. Though the author wanted me to believe that there had been certain character development by the end, I didn’t see how the characters got there. It read as the first book in a series, rather than a standalone. Maybe that was intentional, in case it did really well and there was demand for more books, but it just felt sloppy while I was reading.
