The message is clear and delivered well: “Recognize Asian Americans as Americans already! Stop othering us as the model minority living perpetually in the background only worthy of being accented Chinatown stereotypes!”
What’s amazing is the fluidity and the ambiguity of the scenery and background; the narrative is written in a screenwriter’s script style thingy, and that’s what makes this message hit just a bit harder. It’s a metaphor for the Asian American experience always vying for a bigger role in history and goings-on in our immigrated country.
Of a cute note, there’s romanization of Taiwanese and some Taiwanese-descent characters that make me feel more represented literarily :)
Overall a fairly cute and enjoyable read, lighthearted either way just enough truth and two-hundred-year-old frustration.

Funny, meta, pointing out the truth of so many media images of race & nationality.

Moving, sad. Also funny. Going to be one of my favourite books of the year.
