“Of course I usually bring flowers when I’m invited to dinner but I’ve noticed you like cigarettes. I suppose cigarettes must be like flowers for someone who likes cigarettes.”

Fredrik Backman writes in such a way that you are amused by his characters descriptions page after page and then all of a sudden you are hit by that characters true emotions and amusement becomes sympathy and love for this character. Only Backman could write a sports story that I actually enjoyed.

Like all of Backman’s books, the story was endearing, sweet, and at times, heart wrenching. Britt-Marie is loveable even though she shouldn’t be.

An astonishing book. The references especially concerning football but all in general consistentently laced in dialogue and behaviour demonstrating the character development was unmatched. The character building was phenomenal and really made the characters feel like real people,
I never thought I would feel anything but distaste for Kent as a character but saw him as a person and changeable in the final pages with the football pitch and his acceptance of her leaving. Potentially not redeemed but Backman showed him in a new light and I thought it realistic.

I fell in love with the community and happenings, especially with Britt-Marie as you learn more about her. I thought it a great book of realisation and found family, my favourite part being
Britt-Marie finally making choices with herself in mind towards the end.
