I really enjoyed this book as a teenager, and coming back as a young adult I think it still has merit; it has definitely lost some of its magic however, and the themes and story are rather shallow and simplistic. I found the book to be likable all the way through, but by the end I found myself reading quicker not out of anticipation but from desire for the book to be over with.

As the granddaughter of an Irish immigrant and a girl born in ‘85 whose heart is made of blackened grunge music, this is the story I wish I had written. It’s a coming of age story of Maggie, whose flighty mother marries an Irishman and moves them across the Atlantic from urban Chicago, uprooting Maggie’s world. Tragedy strikes the family and Maggie is forced to figure out what is really important to her and more importantly, how to truly live.
