Thomas M. McKenna’s Muslim Rulers and Rebels is a case study that examines the complex and everchanging nature of culture and identity in midst of widespread hegemonic forces, focusing on a community on the fringes of Cotabato City called Campo Muslim as they go through the Bangsamoro Rebellion of the mid 1970s and later transition from the Marcos Administration to the Aquino one. McKenna’s study focuses on what life was like for those neither part of any of the armed militia groups nor vying for political office—those of the broader majority of people that often get left behind by history.

Overall it was pretty fascinating to read about the Bangsamoro Rebellion from the ground, and learn more about the development of the MNLF and MILF, how they formed, what they stood for, and how they were received by the local populations. I also learned a lot about the construction of Muslim identity in the Philippines and it made me think about how the points of view I have or are shared by people I know were both consciously and unconsciously formed by various exterior forces and influences, some challenged, some adapted, some wholly accepted, and perhaps all eventually amalgamated into rhetoric that suits one’s pragmatic needs.

If you have any interest about this stuff I recommend checking this study out.
