I loved everything about this story, based upon a true story of a miraculous woman who becomes a man to become a doctor in a time when all options were closed to women. This was a beautifully written depiction of the strife and struggles that would befall her. Highly recommend!!

Absolutely loved this book. The discussion of gender and identity was so subtle yet so honest, and I gained a deep perspective on so many things I didn’t expect to.

I was not enjoying this book. I found the main character flat, and with this being based off someone who was probably a fascinating individual, it didn't sit right. Why are we distilling this person down to cardboard?

So obviously I was in the minority here, but I found it slow reading. The text was labored/old-fashioned so I was never completely drawn into the narrative. I did find the basic information about a woman who spent her entire adult life disguised as a man in order to work as a doctor fascinating, but never really felt her emotional life.
