this did not enthral me as much as i had hoped. maybe i just was not quite in the mood for it.

regardless, 'the mystery of the gables' and 'the house of black evil' were very, very good. i also enjoyed 'our strange traveller', 'a regent of love rhymes', 'the river's edge', 'ghosts' and 'the treasure of the tombs' albeit to a lesser extent.

An interesting collection of ghostly, haunting and supernatural short stories dating from the Victorian period through the mid-20th Century. Perhaps inevitably, some work better than others and some haven't aged quite so well.

Overall, certainly worth a look if you're in the mood for short ghost stories.

I grew up reading ghost anthologies and when I found this collection when I was in the UK this summer, I snapped it up without a second thought and it was so worth it. A few stories were duds as always, but the rest that followed were worth the cash. I loved it so much and I will be on the lookout for other anthologies edited by Mike Ashley.
