I’m glad I got into this series when I did because now I don’t have to worry about waiting two years for the next one… that ending was insane and I need the next one like right now

What a great sequel! This series feels so much more grown-up and serious than Red Queen did and I love seeing Aveyard's writing develop.

The cast of characters is still large (at some times perhaps a bit too large) but most of them do get their own storylines/focused chapters and the found family trope is so well done, especially as it's not just kids running around, they also have found parent-ish figures! Family! Corayne and Andry have my heart <3 but so do all the others.

Of course, you know me, I'm always rooting for the evil queens and Erida is such a well-rounded character and as I'm a hoe for queen's/gender history, you can really tell that Aveyard has done her research here — Erida represents so many aspects of reigning women in history and their motivation, aswell as the internal and external criticisms they have to deal with. If she weren't in league with Taristan, I'd almost want her to succeed.

The ending was absolutely devastating but so so good, too, and a great set-up for the next book.

I had mixed feelings about this book…I still remain fascinated by this world and these characters and I will definitely be finishing the series. But this book unfortunately felt very much like a filler book.

Let’s start with the things I like:
-       world/magic is expanded further
-       the assassin is actually an assassin and yet I love her
-       any scene with Corayne and Andry
-       our band of characters spend a lot of time together in this book
-       the multiple POV chapters
-       Erida is probably the best female villain I’ve read in a while, and her relationship with Taristan brings such depth to both characters (you know it’s good when the villains have you doubting who you’re rooting for)
-       the ending *shakes hand at cliffhangers*

Things I didn’t like
-       the plot was. so. slow. it feels like nothing happens in this 500-plus-page book
-       a few of the side characters, like Charlie and Sigil, don’t really get much attention and feel as if they’re there more to move the plot forward (which is bad when the plot doesn’t actually appear to be moving)
-       the repetition
-       did I mention that parts felt very boring?

Anyways, mixed feelings. I’m looking forward to the third book though—my optimism is telling me it’ll be the best one of the series *fingers crossed*

Amazing. It's fast moving but oh my God it ramps up from chapter 27 on. AND IT ENDS
IN A CLIFFHANGER. YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME, VICTORIA AVEYARD.

This book was so good! After a quick reread of the first before diving into this one and I have to say, it lived up to its beginning very well. I loved it!! The fact that this ends in a cliffhanger though…devastating. Heartbreaking. I don’t known if I can wait a year for this!!

This was a fantasy masterpiece. I loved it even more than the first book. We got a lot more depth from the characters and a lot more development with their relationships. I was LIVING for Erida and Taristan. They got a lot more ruthless as they got closer to each other. I absolutely love Sorasa. We got to see her walls come down a little bit (specifically with Dom) and I loved reading about her past. She’s such an interesting character. Of course Corayne and Andry were really cute. I’ve been screaming at Andry to just tell her how he feels. My favorite moment from this book was Ridha and the Jydi raiders meeting up with the Companions and the Treckish soldiers. It was such a classic fantasy moment right before the big showdown when all hope seems lost. I literally got chills reading it because Dom was so sad and angry and when he saw Ridha he was so happy and full of hope. Victoria did not need to end the book that way. I didn’t love Ridha just because we didn’t see too much of her but it made me sad that Dom lost another person he was close to. Now I have to wait a year or more to see Corayne reunite with everyone else. As they were fleeing Gidastern and they were getting left behind one by one, I was so confused. I just want them to be all together again. Overall, I loved this story. It was a great fantasy journey with so many different moving parts and characters that I love.
