Slowly delving into Rilke's bibliography and he definitely has the potential to become a favourite poet of mine. Favourites from this collection include:

  • Did I not breathe out of midnights...
  • Straining so hard against the powerful night...
  • Often I gazed at you in wonder...

Now for some overall thoughts about this collection: Regardless of the subject matter, I'm coming to realize that Rilke is the type of poet who needed to write and who demands to be read. His poetry is able to capture the moments in life that so often evade words, in a way that is not only accurate, but beautiful. This type of lyrical poem speaks to the deepest part of the human experience.

Also when I was reading this I could not stop thinking that this collection is what the album Midnights aspired to be.

religious poets r still best at deep soul soothing - suitable for night bus/walk reading, maybe try aloud!

Do not let this be your Rilke introduction!

It is very disappointing, this is the first Rilke I read and was so let down. Two days after finishing this little book, I opened to a random page in the Oxford World Classics edition of Rilke's Selected works at the bookshop and it blew me away. I had no such experience with any poem in this book, despite reading each poem at least twice and throwing everything I had at it to make them into something.

However the book itself is a beautiful object, this beauty is not shared by the content.

This edition by Pushkin Press and translated by Will Stone, presents the twenty-two poems in one volume translated into english for the first time.

It is divided into:
Poems to Night, drafts of Poems to Night, and further poems and sketches related to the Night.

I have read some of [a:Rainer Maria Rilke|7906|Rainer Maria Rilke|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1493785350p2/7906.jpg]'s poems before, so when I saw this book about the "night theme" it immediately called my attention. Although, I couldn't find what I was expecting. It's hard to explain why, but I just can say that I haven't been able to really feel what they say.

Thanks to Pushkin Press and NetGalley for providing me with this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

“Nothing is so mute / as a god’s mouth.” —page 48

from the bottom of my heart, i actually don’t know how to rate this. i struggled with this a little—many of these poems resist any interpretation—and found the theme of night to be overwhelming to the point of vagueness. maybe it’s a translation issue, or maybe i just like rilke’s other works better, but this was a middling read. honestly, i’m not sure! some verses / lines were really good (see above quote), but the whole piece . . . idk!

My first Rilke, I didn't get too much of it, deep poetry might not be for me.

Not my favourite book on poems but I feel poems are a very personal thing and opinions will vary drastically.

At the time I read them none of them resonated with me or evokes any feelings however that may differ is I read them while in a different mind set so I don’t want to discredit them in any way.

I would definitely recommend to friends interested in poetry and will probably revisit them myself when in a different frame of mind.

This felt like coming home, made me long for the warm nights of summer where it wraps around me like an old friend. This collection of RIlke's poems are beautiful, but I found myself falling in love with the draft's from this collection.
I found so many lines that felt like they were in harmony with my own soul.
