This was lovely and I really should read more historical fiction.

Last year, I finally read Little Women, which was part of the reason why I requested this ARC.  And I'm so glad I did--this book is definitely rooted in history and biographies about the other Alcott, and I learned so much from it.

Save for Stephen King and Shakespeare, I tend not to wonder what the lives of authors are/were like, but this book changed that for me.  How does becoming the breadwinner of your family affect you?  And how does it affect your family?  How can you make a name for yourself when your sister already has one?  These are all questions that Hooper poses in her novel about May Alcott.

Additionally, the tone and writing is very reminiscent of Little Women itself.  There's plenty of humility, hardship, and family, which makes it perfect for a romp after any of Alcott's novels.  I'd definitely recommend this if you're a fan of any of the Alcotts, or if you want to read about real life artists in Paris.

It was interesting to read something more historically accurate about the Alcott sisters, because I had assumed that since Little Women was based on their life it was all fact. This work of fiction helped me feel a little bit more charitable towards “Amy”.

On a side note, I was really glad that the new Little Women adaptation had two endings, of sorts - the Little Women perfection for all who couldn’t do without a bow at the end, and the peek at Louisa May Alcott’s true ending.
