I'm not sure if it's a matter of timing, but I was so excited to read this book and felt like it fell short of my expectations. I found myself rereading sections because some of the meaning felt lost to me. There were a lot of good moments throughout the book.

SpoilerI liked how everything was a little trippy at the end, and the whole scene with the lighthouse where our biologist is learning that she's been lied to. I wish we could have learned more about the psychologist and what was told to her before she died though, I guess the author wants to leave our narrator to have to learn more on her own. I am not sure I really enjoyed the husbands accounts, most of that section read like an essay quoting texts, example he "went this way and did that", and it read kind of weird.

I liked the journal-esque way the book is written and how her account is somewhat frantic/crazy/trippy because she is potentially hallucinating/dying. I liked the part with the door, after reading the husbands account where he saw himself going into the Tower/Tunnel I KNEW that that's where the boarder must be!!

So most parts were good, possibly bad timing on my part with reading since I had to stop halfway through for a week.

If you want a book that is the stream of consciousness of an unreliable narrator this is the book for you!

Think of the book and movie as separate entities!

Really interesting narrative voice that was more distant and almost “scientific” that I wasn’t used to. Also likely would have liked it more as a physical book than audiobook, a couple times I zoned out and then it took a minute to get back into it. Liked the concepts and biological exploration of it, cool ideas with unique execution. Something different!!
