LESBIAN DIRTY DANCING.

That's it, that's the review.

Okay, but seriously, what a treasure of a book. Everything about it is flawless. I love my Jewish baby lesbian and my Latinx lesbian dancing queen, and I just loved every single thing about them. So many great conversations about Jewish identity and race and queerness and class and also a lot of fantastic dancing and flirting and drama.

Y'all need this book in your life, right now. Let the sunshine in.

I haven't seen Dirty Dancing - but this reminded me of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season two in the tone and style and well, that was fun!

This would have been four stars but there were so many errors in the text, like the wrong person speaking or missing quotations, commas, etc. that not only did I notice, which I never do, but it was actually distracting. Beyond that, it was an okay read that I enjoyed but the ending was very cheesy and I would have liked something different instead. But for a KU queer read by an author whose work I enjoy, I definitely recommend this!

Cute. Dirty Dancing isn't necessarily something I think needs updating—by and large it has stood the test of time—but a queer twist on it? Yes please. No major surprises here in terms of what happens (there's only so much room for that sort of surprise in a retelling!), but the updates that Moskowitz makes generally work pretty much seamlessly. (Exception: it is really, really hard to beat the line 'Nobody puts Baby in a corner.')

The book badly needed proofreading, though—I hope this is something that will be corrected in a later edition.

I thought the way the author translated the original Dirty Dancing to contemporary Jewish, queer, and race issues was done so well. The book did not shy away from bringing differing issues to the surface and balancing them well with a very sweet romance and compelling coming-of-age/coming out story. I loved Sugar's growing relationships with her mother and sister and how they navigated the bumps along the way. There's a lot of great stuff going on in this little book.

The book desperately needed a proofreader to catch major errors like misnamed characters, incorrect pronouns, etc.
