It's an 80-page book. It's not a scholarly treatment of haiku, or Japanese poetry generally, or even of haiku about love. It's a selection of widely-ranging poems about various aspects of love--new love, true love, lust, dying love, absence of love--interspersed with beautiful Japanese woodblock prints illustrating the concept or subject of each two-page spread. The poems are enjoyable, the art is a real treat, and one must appreciate the book for what it is: a selection of poems and art meant for casual enjoyment.

No, you probably wouldn't give it to your lover--there's too many poems with contrasting messages--
"don't please.../when she whispers it/you're halfway there", or
"one's own wife/in the daylight, delicious/as stolen love";

but wait, a few pages later,

"love leaving/passes/love coming in",
"stifling yawns/stifling myself/I remain wife" and
"no lust/no love/just domestic cares".

Give this as an attempted romantic gift and he or she might question which poems you meant for him or her.

In the end, perhaps the point is just as the haiku on the back cover states: "so varied/and ever-changing--/love", and these are a few poems exploring the subject and being paired with artwork, and there's nothing wrong with that.
