This is just actually half a book, and not a very good one at that. I'm a fan of the romantic thriller, but it still has to make sense. I guess, as this is just half a book, and not actually a short story with an ending, etc., she had to get the romance rolling early, but most of the first part is ludicrous and difficult to read.

I hope Laura Griffin gets to buy her new car or whatever prompted her to write this nonsense, and gets back to writing good books for her long-time fans because this one reads more like a story outline, and not an actual book.

I received a free copy of this novella from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Up-front warning, this is Part One of a two-part novel - it says it in the title - there is a cliffhanger.

I am, by and large, a fan of Laura Griffin's Tracers series. I have issues occasionally with one or two of her male characters who dial up the alpha but I really enjoy the mysteries so I was very excited to see the start of a new series about a super-secret group of Navy SEALs called the Alpha Crew.

Our female lead is Emma Wright, she is the aide to Renee Connor, wife to the US Ambassador to the Philippines. After an aid mission trip to one of the islands Emma, Renee and Dr Juan Delgado are flying back when their plane runs into trouble and crash-lands. Alpha Crew are sent after the plane to rescue any survivors. Ryan Owen is the leader of Alpha Crew. Because so much of this novella is set up for part two it is difficult to say more without recounting the whole plot.

I liked Emma Wright, she was normal and feisty - when she went for help in the jungle she reacted both in the way I expect I would (terrified, imagining the worst) and the way I hope I would (calming herself down, being resourceful). Then, when she gets back from the jungle she is tenacious and campaigns for a proper investigation into why the plane crashed.

Ryan is rugged and handsome (duh, Navy SEAL isn't good-looking the first test in BUD/s?), he does have unfortunate alphahole tendencies but Emma just blasts right through them - yey!

Because this is romantic suspense and only part one I have LOADS of questions:
Spoiler• how does the prologue fit in at all?????
• is Emma's father involved?
• does Renee's drinking have any bearing on anything?
• why were Alpha Crew in the air so fast?
• who kidnapped Emma (naturally)?
• is Ryan protecting Emma because he is falling in love with her or is there a more sinister motive? And is that why he pulled the 'I can't touch her' routine?

Overall, while I'm not a fan of the cliffhanger, I enjoyed this novella very much. It was well-written, fast-paced with engaging characters and an intriguing plot. I eagerly await part two.

Very, very quick one-sitting-read. That cliffhanger? Mean one, Laura, a real mean one.

The suspense starts from the very first pages and doesn’t slow down. This author has brought all the elements together that I look for in a romantic suspense story, a strong heroine, a tough alpha male, a thrilling mystery, steamy romance and exceptional writing. The only argument that I have is that it ends with a cliffhanger. A practice that is becoming too common in my opinion and one that I do not care for. But, with that being said, I have never been disappointed in a Laura Griffin book and this one is no exception. I am looking forward reading part 2 of the Alpha Crew.

Quickie Review

At the Edge is a very fast read.  You can easily finish it in a couple of hours.  It has suspense, romance, angst, lust, and the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers.  I'm just warning you now so you aren't cussing when you finish the book.

Ryan and Emma meet in very unfortunate circumstances.  Ryan is sent to save all survivors of a plane crash.  They can't stop lusting after each other once they see each other. And I can see why.  They do get pretty close while waiting for the helicopter to come get them.  I love the whole whispers in the dark aspect.  It helps bring your defenses down.

Emma is thrown into danger once again, and Ryan is there to save her once again. But can they be more than just rescuer and rescued??? I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

At the Edge by Laura Griffin is a 2016 Pocket Star publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher, as an XOXpert, the official street team of XOXO After Dark.

A new series by Laura Griffin! Who can resist that temptation? This novella length story is the first book in the Alpha Crew series and is centered around Navy SEAL Ryan Owen and Emma Wright.

When a plane crashes in the Philippine jungle, Ryan and his team are commissioned to find the plane and rescue any survivors, which is how he meets Emma. Emma is the sole survivor of the crash, and while making their way back to the states the two forge a bond. But, the rescue mission is only the beginning. It seems Emma’s search for answers about the crash has garnered her some unwanted attention, which means Ryan must protect her, even if it means he must put his growing attraction to her aside.

As always, Laura Griffin has written a scorching hot, action packed, romantic suspense story. Awesome storyline, non-stop suspense, political intrigue, and hot Navy SEALS. What more can you ask for? This story is one of two parts, so be warned, there is a ‘to be continued’ ending, but “Edge of Surrender” is also available now, so there is no wait time.

If this is any indication of how this series will play out, I can hardly wait for more!

I enjoy books where the hero is a Seal because, well, who doesn't? I also appreciate it when the heroine of the book is capable and has a brain. Laura Griffin writes Ryan and Emma in such a way as they feel like real people. They react as they should and the things they say make sense for who they each are within the story. You like them, you want them to survive, and you want to see what happens next. The suspense is well done, the action feels realistic and the emotions are palpable.

The book starts with a bang, well a crash. And goes from there. I was actually expecting a lot more of the first book to take place in the jungle after the plane crash and was pleasantly surprised at the pacing of the book and the way it takes you from scene to scene at speed that it fast enough to keep your interest without being too fast that you have a hard time keeping up.

It is hard to say a lot without being full of spoilers, and the book definitely has a lot of fun to be spoiled! Highly recommend. 4.5 Stars
