I liked the first two stories but Lance didn't do it for me. Maybe I actually like science fiction too much so it just felt like a pompous mockery.

This contains 3 short stories. The Aurelian I really enjoyed with its unsettling descriptions of moths and the Dahl-esque ending. Signs and Symbols was enjoyable as well but this interpretation really made it shine for me. Without it I wouldn't have known what to do with the ending. Lance, on the other hand, didn't really get to me, possibly because of the subject of space travel (I liked the chinchillas though). While Nabokov's writing is masterful I find it hard to really get immersed in it, my mind just keeps drifting instead of focusing on his words, maybe that's why I have a hard time deciphering some of his stories.

Nabokov left me captivated by his unique prose and the profound themes he explores. Each story carries its own weight, drawing into a world where imagination reigns supreme, where madness blurs the lines of reality, and where the search for individuality takes centre stage against the backdrop of the unknown.
Nabokov's language is a marvel, painting vivid landscapes of emotion and introspection. While each story stands as a testament to his literary prowess, "Lance" particularly shines with its celebration of love, departure, and the search for meaning in the cosmos.
Overall, 'Lance' is a collection that I found myself returning to, each time discovering new layers of meaning and insight. For me, it's a solid 4/5, a demonstration of its lasting impact and the richness of its narrative tapestry.
