This is part of my challenge of reading all 80 penguin little black books. This was book 1/80.

1. Mrs Rosie and the Priest by Giovanni Boccaccio
2. As Kingfishers Catch Fire by Gerard Manley Hopkins

A poetry collection featuring 31 of Gerard Manley Hopkins' poems and a selection of extracts from his journals. The best poems were "The Sea and the Skylark," "Binsey Poplars," and "Spring and Fall"; the rest had excessive purple prose and contained too much religion for my taste.

I have read better work in the past. I did like some parts of his journal, yet I was bored at numerous occasions.

Some poems were quite dark and challenging. Most of them were inspired by the priest's faith, others by nature.  His cadence and wordplay is fascinating to read. However most of the poems didn't have much of an impact to me to be honest, probably because I'm not religious. There are also some extracts from his journal with beautiful nature writing, which made me realise I should read more nature writing, as I love that.
