I didn't love this as much as previous books in this series.  this is the first of them I've read on audio; I didn't love the narrator, so maybe that all played a part in it  there was just a lot of conversation and a lot of grief and rage.  which were valid,  but not fun to read.

I'm not the target audience for this; remember that as you read. If you're not either you might find value.

I read and enjoyed books 1-3. I carelessly picked this up not realizing it was #9.
I'm glad I did; it will save me reading five others.

OK, several of the characters have been dead. One may be made of gingerbread. Reader thinks of the words "author" and "mushrooms" simultaneously. Nevertheless, there is some interesting speculation on how the doors work/think/operate.

But for me this one had the marks of a story that's gone on too long, or perhaps a coda. There is a plot/quest/adventure, but it's really only to set up the Big Showdown. And throughout, we get what feel like explanations from a kindly social worker to a group of confused YAs. Well, sure, that's exactly what this is; but others have gone there and been a great deal less explicit about it. This jut lays it out.

You could argue that someone had to go there, and you'd be right. And McGuire, with her bibliography, is perhaps the most qualified candidate.

I am an over-70 male who was lucky enough to avoid childhood/YA trauma. If this series, and especially this book, helps even one person who wasn't, then it's great and my opinion doesn't matter.

So ... I didn't enjoy it, but I'm glad for those who recognized themselves in it.

A carryover from the previous novella. I liked this part of the story better.
