August 2016 - the word-within-a-word game went over Ben's head, but he could still guess some of the animals and particularly liked the ending.

Clever idea, with the red letters spelling out which animal will come next. I think kids who are learning how to read might really like this. I wasn't super-crazy about the illustrations (except for the snake with the scissors - I always love it when snakes do un-snake-like things), but the guessing game element made it memorable and fun.

Simple, yet clever premise. Kids will have a lot of fun figuring out the hidden animals and coming up with their own words that contain other words.

5 practices - talk, write
6 skills - vocabulary, print awareness, print motivation

Best for small groups or lap reading - can follow up by making your own words within words, or with older kids have them rearrange letters to make new words.
