I'll admit when i first got this book i was expecting it to be more Ascalonian based and not so much a search for an item and bug out book. I loved that this book showed the horrors of battle and its outcomes and it did a fantasic job of explaining places you can actually visit. I just wish the game devs didn't drop the ball with their one or two head nods to this book when its an important part of the lore.

Quite a good read, though the style was not cohesive and lacked general fluency in places. Whilst the actual plot was pleasing, the execution, in places, was less than exceptional. However, I did find this book enjoyable, though doubt that an individual who has not played the games would enjoy it.

Much better than anticipated, especially since it didn't have any characters in it that I had knowledge of from the game. Doesn't exactly deserve four stars, but if I could give it 3.5, I would.

It was good. Cut a little short and some less than developed characters but good nonetheless

While I can't say this book was the *best* I've ever read, or even the best written, as a player of Guild Wars from early on it was nice to see a full story written in the world. Not only did it elaborate more on the world, but it set the tone for the upcoming Guild Wars 2.

There was a LOT of 'history lesson' in this book, which was slightly annoying, but it was interesting, as a current Guild Wars player to see how the world I am playing in now is going to be changing. Ascalon also proved to be an interesting - and sufficiently creepy - story, though it was a bit disappointing to see the place we'd played in so often go back to the charr. Yeesh.

The story was a bit cliche, and it took a bit for me to care about any of the characters, but once the adventure got going, it was quite engrossing. Again the plot was fairly cliche, but all in all it was a fun read.

I'm giving this book 3 stars based purely on the fact that it does a good job of explaining some of the lore of Guild Wars 2. It is not a very good book on it's own, but I wasn't exactly expecting it to be.

Years ago, this was the first video game based novel I read. It set for me the standard of what such a novel should be. This book is gripping, world building, has well-developed characters and that unmistakable fantasy feel. It adds to the wonderful world already in the video game and makes it even more interesting.
Five stars for me!
