I really enjoyed this fast paced mystery/thriller. On furlough from prison to attend his sister’s funeral, Ethan Lockhart has only 48 hours to find whatever answers he can.

I loved the anti-hero protagonist, which meant a lot of not legal ways of tracking down who is responsible for Abby’s death. There are very few truly “good guys” in this story which gave it depth and kept me truly on my toes trying to guess what would happen next.

While I normally don’t enjoy flashbacks - Bourelle made “past” chapters from Abby’s perspective and the “current” ones from Ethan, Whitney, Shark, etc. I loved the way that this was executed and it kept the pacing steady and the mystery intriguing.

I didn’t guess the “whodunnit” until the moment the main characters did and even this opened up a new exciting apprehension sequence. I can’t stress enough how much I enjoyed the pacing.

Narration:
David Bendena was new to me and he was absolutely the perfect fit for Bourelle’s writing and characters. It was a truly enjoyable performance. I never wanted to push pause.

48 Hours to Kill was an intense, action packed book! Definitely recommend to anyone who likes a suspenseful book!

⚠️ There’s a fair amount of violence but it wasn’t super graphic.

48... 47... 46...
With the hours ticking by, can he find out the truth about his sister's murder before it's too late?

Ethan has been serving a ten year sentence for armed robbery, and is dedicated to putting his past behind him. He plans to stay on the straight-and-narrow upon his eventual release, which isn't far off. When Ethan receives news that his little sister, Abby, has been murdered, he is absolutely devastated. He is approved for a 48 hour furlough to attend her funeral, and gets a tip that Abby's body was never found. With only a short window of freedom, Ethan begins investigating the circumstances of his sister's death, which means throwing himself back into his old crowd. He's convinced that his old boss, the notorious Shark, has something to do with Abby's untimely death. He teams up with Whitney, Abby's best friend, and together they begin to piece together information as it comes their way. Things quickly heat up between them, but their feelings have to go on the back burner as Ethan's past starts to catch up to him, and his time is almost up...
I struggled to put this audiobook down! This story kept me on the edge of my seat up until the end. I was really rooting for Ethan as he desperately tried to find the truth about what happened to his sister, despite how it could impact him in the long run. The narrator brought a lot of intensity to the climactic scenes in this crime thriller, and perfectly portrayed each character. I especially enjoyed his voice for Shark, as he sounded exactly as I imagined he would. I would recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for their next great read!

If you've ever read my reviews, you know, I'm a big fan of the Count of Monte Cristo retelling. I love a good vengeance tale. This story purports to be one, but I'm not sure it is. The book starts with a fantastic scene where older brother Ethan comes to his little sister's aid both in a situation with another male character, and also he  saves her from drowning. It feels like it's supposed to foreshadow the darkness in her. that will be explored later. Ethan is a Big Brother who is serving time in prison. He's getting 48 hours out, of a Max security prison, in order to do attend his little sister's funeral.
At first, it sounded like he's innocent of the crime he's in prison for but you soon find out he's not. Also, Ethan is unrelatable. He is a very much a Mary Sue. He's so much better than everybody else who's in prison with him. And I don't like him. He is trying to decide on whether if he's going to spend the time out trying to solve his sister's murder or not.  Honestly I don't care. I got 20% in and realized I did not care. So, DNF

48 Hours to Kill by Andrew Bourelle is a high-octane crime thriller.

Convict Ethan Lockhart is surprised he has been granted 48 hours of unsupervised furlough to attend his younger sister Abby’s funeral. He has a list of conditions that he blithely assures his caseworker Daryl Maxwell that he won’t break. But once Ethan decides to try to find out who murdered Abby, he will do whatever it takes to find her and her killer.

Ethan is serving time for crime he committed while working for Stanley “Shark” D’Antonio. He refused to turn on Shark and in return, his former boss agreed to take care of Abby financially. To his dismay, Abby and her best friend, Whitney Potter, give up college to work in Shark’s strip club. Ethan is convinced Shark is responsible for his sister’s death, but Shark denies any involvement. Ethan gets in touch with Calvin Taylor, the detective who worked Abby’s murder before her case was turned over to the FBI. But Special Agent Brian Hughes is nowhere close to making an arrest.

Ethan crosses paths with Whitney who helps him as he tries to figure out who murdered Abby. He uncovers troubling information at his sister’s apartment but he is uncertain if what he learns has anything to do with her murder. But, overcome with guilt for putting his sister into harm’s way, Ethan continues to believe Shark knows more than he is saying. Neither his former boss nor his muscle is no match for Ethan as he tries to find Abby's killer.

48 Hours to Kill is a crime thriller that moves at a blistering pace. Ethan has plenty of regrets but he accepts responsibility for his choices. His determination to find out what happened to Abby is a little foolhardy yet admirable. The storyline is well-executed and the short chapters keep the tension at a fever pitch as Ethan’s 48 hours steadily counts down. With a truly shocking plot twist, Andrew Bourelle brings this pulse-pounding crime thriller to an violent, unpredictable conclusion.

Formulaic. One guy conquers every possible hopeless situation while women swoon, hopelessly weak in the knees.
