I DNF’d the first book (Harlem Shuffle). So I space known better than to pick it up. I get why it’s on must-read lists, but this author really doesn’t do much for me, Pulitzer or not. I’ve got to stop trying to like good works!

The fact that I read this so quickly after finishing the first in the Harlem series is really a testament to the interesting characters and plot line and the talented writing. The depiction of Harlem and by extension New York is still so vivid and you really feel like you’re living through these changing times.
The three novellas I feel like the book was divided into were all gripping. I would like a third one where Elisabeth plays a bigger part but both novels were definitely great standalones too.

Impeccable writing, per usual. Loved the sense of place, Ray’s internal musings, Pepper getting a bit more spotlight. And just like in HS, Dion Graham’s narration is excellent.
