By far my least favorite of the Star Wars prequels, the novelization opens up a whole new experience and makes the story far more bearable.

There were a lot of moments in Episode 1 (Movie) where I was confused how someone could have known one thing or how they discovered where they were or just what was going on. It seemed like there was a lot more going on in the background that we were never made aware of as the viewer.

The novelization fixes a majority of those issues. We get to see moments that explain how we got from point to point and how the Sith seemed to be ahead of the Jedi in moments. It really made the whole book more enjoyable now that I was clued into these moments that were missing from the experience before.

Another thing I enjoyed was more Darth Maul. In the movie we got a few moments with him and then he was gone. However, in this book, we delve deeper into him and get a feeling for who he is rather than just some random dude wielding a dual-lightsaber (which is still kinda awesome) that we knew was associated with the Sith. By giving the reader more information I felt like I could see why he did certain things and could be pulled into the story a bit more.

Overall the insight we get into all the characters is heightened. We get to see Obi-Wan as the impulsive Padawan learner who has moments were he wonders why his Master does the things he does. We got a bit of this from the movie, but the book has the space to delve into that deeper. We also get a view of how Qui-Gon views the world around him and why the council objects to things he has done and why Obi-Wan tells him that it's a bad idea. We get a rounder view of the characters that we didn't have before.

Anakin Skywalker is a much more interesting character than he was in the movie. We get insight into the anger and fear that Yoda comments when testing him that we barely get in the movie. We also get moments where we can already see the obsession with Padme developing and where is stems from. It makes the character well rounded. This was the Anakin Skywalker we wanted to see in the movie and were denied. That insight into what Anakin, or any of the characters, are thinking is so vital to bringing the characters together as a whole that it makes sense that the movie was lacking.

Jar Jar Binks is still around and is one of the few things in the book that I disliked. He was annoying in the movie, but the book just makes him worse. However, it is easier to get past Jar Jar in the novelization as a lot of his moments are his thoughts, which does at some interest to him that wasn't there before. Still annoying though.

Overall, I liked this book. It won't make me a fan of the Phantom Menace anytime soon, but I have a better appreciation for the story than I did before and enjoyed reading the story. If you like Star Wars, I would recommend a read.

I don't remember if I actually read this or did it based on the movie. Thinking I read this since the AR score report says I got 10/10 on it...

I knew this would be out of my comfort zone. It proved to be a step too far. Science-fiction and star wars just isn't for me. I never watched the Star Wars movies and am not planning to. Why read the book you wonder? I picked this up because it is written by Terry Brooks who is one of my favorite authors. I liked the start of the story, but got bored by it pretty soon. Some things were confusing to me, probably because I didn't see the movies.
