On to Among the Shadows: Tales from the Darker Side by L.M. Montgomery, author of the Anne of Green Gables series. These stories were billed as being “unlike any others L.M. Montgomery ever wrote,” “somber, dark, and brooding.” I would like to have a discussion with the blurb writer regarding his or her definitions of these words. Granted, these stories weren’t the Anne books, but they were still awfully full of sweetness and light, and most made for pretty tame ghost stories. Presumably the publishers were attempting to appeal to a different audience, but I’m afraid it backfired. Still, I enjoyed the tales, and one or two of them had a hint of the deliciously sinister.

Of all the short story collections this is probably one of the better offerings - so many of them are repetitive beyond belief (Akin to Anne, I'm looking at you), plus it's hard to remember these were published separately in magazines and not meant to be taken in all at once. Many readers may not know that our Lucy Maud had a dark side - she suffered from a chronic depression most of her life -- and that she used this darkness to spin some really lovely little tales. Some are spooky and Gothic while others more focused on the vagaries of family and alcoholism (some of these are even rather comic). They all hang together in a collection that makes fun reading for a Montgomery fan. As always too, you will read lines and meet characters that take you right back to Anne and Emily.

Interesting collection of short stories, some a bit sugary.

From the back cover:
These nineteen fascinating stories are unlike any others L.M. Montgomery ever wrote. Filled with strange and supernatural occurrences, they are peopled with drunkards, embezzlers, and thieves ... Somber, dark, and brooding, these intriguing stories suggest that love really can last beyond death and that poetic justice does exist.

Another of my favorite Montgomery short story collections -- these stories delve into the supernatural and are especially vibrant in their break from the religious conservativism of the day. She never goes too crazy, but she isn't afraid to openly acknowledge darker elements that cannot be explained, whether she's literally telling tales of paranormal encounters or just featuring the darker side of human nature.

I liked the longer stories better than the shorter ones. Unfortunately, those don't come until the end of the book.

I forgot how much I adore these stories!

This re-read, my favorite has to be "White Magic"--what a world it would be with more men like Randall, who talk about "winds and delicate dawns, mysterious woods in moonlight and starry midnights, silver-white sails going out of the harbour in the magic of the morning, and the grey of gulf storms." L.M. Montgomery's writing is perfect!

I'm not always big on short stories - but I loved this. Truly an underappreciated work from L.M. Montgomery. Dark, and slightly twisted and a true departure from her best known works, Anne of Green Gables and the Emily series.

I would love to own this and read again.

L.M. Montgomery is a long time and all time favorite author of mine. She writes the perfect girls story with just the right mix of adventure, drama and happiness. I find her books a comfort to read and have re-read most of her works many times over the years. They are classics for a reason and that reason is they are great. These are true comfort books for me and books I enjoy re-reading again and again.

This collection of short stories is atypical of the LM Montgomery most girls love and read. They are dark, moody, superstitious stories--dealing with ghosts and death. Being LM Montgomery, even her ghost stories are touched with hope and love and happier sentiments, but this is definitely different. The closest she comes to it in any of her books is some of the scenes throughout her Emily trilogy, where Emily has visions of dead people and experiences death herself on a regular basis.
Even so, the stories are a fascinating glimpse of fancy and dark imagination in a different, and in many ways safer, time.
