As someone who really loved Turtle in Paradise the novel by Jennifer L. Holm I was curious to see how I would feel about the graphic novel, but I loved it just as much. I loved how Turtle comes out of her shell down in the Florida Keys. I loved how colorful the art work was. I loved it all. Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of this book.

I haven’t read the book that this is based on but I really enjoyed it! The artwork was very nice and I loved the story. I will definitely be recommending this one.

Fascinating slice of history and setting in Key West, Florida. Beautifully drawn and the story made we want to read the source novel.

Revisiting a beloved favorite children’s book in graphic novel form was an absolute joy. I loved getting to return to Key West with Turtle and the Diaper Gang. My only criticism is that the original novel is so beloved to me, that the quick nature of reading a graphic novel doesn't allow you to savor the story as much as you can when you read a prose novel. But, getting to actually visuals definitely gives the reading experience something new and different. There are benefits of both reading experiences.

I feel like this book for me was okay. I found Turtle relatable, but to me, her reactions were.. kinda dumb? I dunno. You never really see her get mad at her mom! And it's like.. DUDE YOUR MOM'S DUMB ASSERY GOT YOUR MONEY STOLEN!
Like, either Turtle is a saint, or just as dumb as her mama. Both works!

I know I'm roasting this book, but to me, it just felt like any other story. While I really loved the art, I found the art style inconsistent. You had really old people being drawn realistically, while other characters are drawn more cartoony. I think the story could've been better if Turtle acted like a real kid. She doesn't get angry, or frustrated, or bawl her eyes out. She just rolls with the punches-- which is admirable, but also.. unrealistic and ingenuine. To me, at least.
Turtle isn't mad that her mom sent her to strangers, or that her mom left her alone, or that her mom (indirectly) smashed all the hard work of treasure searching that turtle did. Nope. She just forgives her. I just-- dudes. COME ON.
I dunno, maybe I'm dumb, or missing the point, but I wish someone would've slapped the crap out of Turtle's mom. I always get frustrated at stories like this-- ones that show kids having to be GROWN UPS, without someone defending them, or helping them, or calling out their parents.

Maybe I'm oversensitive, or stupid, but I just.. this story was cute. But bland. To me at least, and while the art was nice, it could be inconsistent at times. Just over all, I think the story would've benefitted from Turtle's mother getting the shit slapped out of her.
