There is a lot of good in this book beginning with the heroine Paige Whiskey who battles through family betrayal and supernatural baddies with determination, grit, and a fair amount of gallantry. The incipient love triangle with her partner in supernatural crime solving, Dexx, and the enigmatic immortal half-demon Lucius makes for some interesting tension, but I tend to find triangles annoying. Both Dexx and Lucius are well written and unique, which keeps the relationship development interesting.
A bigger downside, the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book I kept having the sense that I missed an earlier volume as the complex backstory unfolded--often referencing conversations or events that did not get described until chapters later, if at all.
