This book, save for some of the names and titles used, is completely different from the movie that is loosely based on it. While both Bladerunner and this book tackle the notion of what it means to be alive/real as one of the core themes of their respective stories, the stories themselves and how they are told are vastly different. That being the case, on its own merits, I would recommend this book to anyone who finds discussions around what constitutes something being alive to be interesting.

If it didn’t continually reference women’s breasts in the weirdest ways and the main guy having sex with an android that looks like a teenager I would have given it 4 stars. It seriously wore me down

philosophically, this was a great books, and provoked some great thoughts about empathy, what it means to be human, and artificial life. the animal economy and mercerism were fascinating and i wish these things were expanded upon, but just as symbols for so-called empathy they were great, especially when held up against Isidore and the idea of “specials.” I feel like generally the writing style was not for me… simple yet all over the place and honestly I’d probably say the same for the plot. The characters sucked and while that was kinda the point, you can still write bad characters well… which was not the case here. I don’t know, I just feel like you could get the same message and ideas elsewhere and enjoy it more. I understand this was revolutionary at the time but it doesn’t hit for me now. Except for the mood organ, wow! What a wild piece of tech that feels so very now and of the future.

I can’t say I quite “get” everything in this book, but the more I think about it the more that becomes clear. Being a big fan of Bladerunner makes me a bit biased in favor of this, and it’s a lot more digestible than The Man in the High Castle. Androids is probably a great place to start with Dick if I had to guess.

The passage in the apartment building toward the end left me feeling sad and cold.

Gotta lower the score here for all of the misogyny..

I did really enjoy this read, the part where he got arrested had me questioning everything lol
