My students love the Black Lagoon series, and they enjoyed this one as well. However, I was disappointed that, on page 8, when the students are trying to decide on what author to select for a visit, the girls on the committee are "pushing for a girls book author. 'Cute little kittens, sweet little horsies, and princess ballerinas'...pink, pink, pink."
All types of books are for all types of students. Classifying books as either girls books or boys books sends the message that there are some books that are only for certain kids. What about my boys who like reading about ballerinas, my girls who don't, and my students who don't feel like they really fit in either category? I was sad to see this message in a world where young kids are already overwhelmed with the pressures of gender roles.
