Een boek waar ik enorm naar uitkeek, maar die me enorm heeft teleurgesteld. *zucht*
Zo, ik moest wat moeite doen om dit boek te krijgen. Bibliotheek #1 was de enige die hem had, maar ik mag maar 2 boeken lenen (stom gastleenabonnement). De eerste keer had ik dus 2 boeken, de tweede keer was ik ziek, de derde keer was ie uitgeleend, en de vierde keer had ik hem dan toch! Ik was enorm enthousiast over het boek, ik kan altijd wel een kerstboek gebruiken, vooral als er ook nog een dino bij is. Helaas... het boek was gewoon niet voor mij.
Ik zal een goed/slecht review maken.
Slecht/bleh/brak/nee dank je:
*Brenda: Ach, moeten we nu medelijden hebben ach gut gut gut, echt stoer hoor dat je het kut hebt thuis en dan maar iemand in een rolstoel pest tot ie niks meer kan dan huilen, sneu meisje. Sorry hoor, ik word zo moe van boeken waar iemand gepest wordt, maar we moeten het maar allemaal medelijden hebben met de pester want die arme jongen (of meisje) heeft waarschijnlijk een waardeloze thuissituatie of iets anders. Sorry, ik ben gepest en ik HAAT dit gedoe. Kunnen we gewoon een pester hebben die gemeen is en dat is het?
*De Jager: Mijn hemel wat een walgelijk type. En hoe is hij nog nooit gearresteerd? Speelt dit boek zich af in Amerika dat hij gewoon met een geweer kan rondlopen en niemand hem aanhoudt? Als je dat hier doet namelijk wordt je meteen opgepakt met veel fanfare. En wie bedreigt een 10-jarig kind en zegt dat ie op zijn muur komt hangen? En dan kan ik nog doorgaan. Ja, hij was wel een echte slechterik, gewoon al vanaf zijn jeugd. Dus ja, de schrijver heeft het goed gedaan, maar hij was gewoon iets té van het goede voor mij.
*Kerstmisaurus: In ieder geval een stukje. Ik snap dat het rot is dat je alleen bent, maar om nou een kado te jatten en zelfs mee te gaan op de reis van de kerstman, nee.
*Het einde. Waarom moet het zo cliché eindigen. Was het echt nodig om het zo sparkly en glittery te laten eindigen? Aan de ene kant was het wel lief, maar ja, het lag ook wel aan Brenda en hoe die moeder was (maar we moeten maar medelijden hebben want ze heeft net haar man verloren aan een scheiding).
*De elvenliedjes. Misschien dat het aan de vertaling lag, maar ze waren gewoon zo eh. Ik had moeite om ze te lezen.
*Dat onze hoofdpersoon nooit met iemand praatte over hoe hij zich voelde. *zucht*
Goed:
*Wat er met de jager gebeurd, en dat was al een reden om dit boek 2 sterren te raten.
*De illustraties, die waren zoooo goed. Maar ja, dat had ik al verwacht vanwege wie de illustrator is.
*Toch een beetje het kerstmissfeer die heerlijk was gedaan.
*De Kerstmisaurus, ik hou van dinosaurussen en deze is wel erg speciaal. Al las ik zijn naam steeds als Kermisaurus.
*De Noordpool, mag ik daar ook eens heen? Het lijkt me echt supermagisch, al zal ik waarschijnlijk snel moe worden van de elven.

Seasonal story with a dinosaur and a bully. But it works.

You wouldn't really expect either a dinosaur OR a school bully in it to be a Christmas tale. Yet, Fletcher does make this work. First with rhyming picture books, and now a full-length novel, he writes an accessible child-friendly plot.
Encased and preserved from prehistoric times, the baby dinosaur is found and raised by elves and Santa Claus millions of years after all the other dinosaurs are extinct, he grows up loved but lonely. Thousands of miles away, dinosaur-mad William Trundle faces his own personal demons, as he and his cash-strapped Dad prepare for a Christmas while William also faces a new student at school, one intent on bullying him and isolating him away from his friends.
The scene is set for the stories William and the Christmasaurus to clash, after William wishes for a dinosaur from Santa. But with a Hunter on the prowl, a bully and William's wheelchair holding him back - just what will happen?
I read this aloud to my nearly-9-year-old. On the cusp of not believing anymore, I did wonder if the book would tip him over the edge, but the book does skirt the line between raising questions and keeping the idea of magic and belief alive.
Fletcher's love of poetic lines remains visible, with the rhyming Elves communicating in verse. The dinosaur theme is always going to be a popular one and the Christmasaurus (I got tired of saying this aloud repeatedly!) has personality and is able to communicate non-verbally. William makes an appealing protagonist, and the bullying theme may be a little upsetting for readers (especially in a Christmas story) early on.
I thought the mention of William's 'wonky' house got very tedious... just why is any house 'wonky', even if the family there don't have much money? The Hunter was a rather stereotypical creation, and my son worked out a few twists long before they were explained, though we both enjoyed the uplifting ending.
The scene is set for future escapades, and my son has already asked for book 2 from the library. While they are big books, the chapters aren't too long and the illustrations break things up, so a 7-10 year old will not struggle.
It's always good when themes of disability and bullying are brought to the attention of young readers, especially when there is explanation, tolerance and understanding at the end of it all.
It has moments of humour, some fairly successful mixing of genres and elements that can't fail to win over a primary-aged market.

I listened to the audiobook of this story and the Narrater is so good. It is such a magical story. Written brilliantly. It's the first of Tom Fletcher's books and I will definitely be reading another.
It really takes you on a journey and its so lovely. I will be reading this to my nieces and nephews at Christmas, they love story's and I think this will go down very well.
It was so magically festive and I love a good festive book, doesn't matter what time of year it is.

Meine Meinung
Ich war sehr auf diese süße Geschichte gespannt. Natürlich weiß ich, dass es Kinderbuch ist, trotzdem hat es mich mit 21 Jahren immer noch verzaubert. Das Cover ist so schön und detailliert gestaltet und passt perfekt zur Geschichte .Auf den ersten Seiten, sind Zeichnungen der Hauptpersonen, diese Idee hat mir sehr gut gefallen, da man sich so die Charaktere von Anfang an sehr gut vorstellen konnte. Der Schreibstil, war natürlich sehr kindgerecht. Aber selbst ich fand die Verniedlichungen und Wichtelreime sehr putzig. Gerade für Kinder, ist es bestimmt sehr lustig. Sie passen gut zur Geschichte. Trotzdem wurde alles sehr detailliert beschrieben Die Länge der Geschichte von 384 Seiten, hat mich für ein Kinderbuch doch sehr überrascht, aber die Geschichte liest sich so leicht und flüssig, das die Geschichte viel zu schnell zu Ende war. Besonders gut gefallen hat mir das William als Hauptfigur im Rollstuhl sitzt und trotzdem ein ganz normales Leben führt. Vielleicht werden Behinderungen so für die Gesellschaft normaler. Der Weihnachtosaurus wir so süß beschrieben, dass ich ihn mir von Anfang an gut vorstellen konnte. Am Anfang der Geschichte geht es um den kleinen Weihnachtosaurus und wie er von den Weihnachtswichteln im Eis gefunden und zum Weihnachtsmann gebracht wird. Dann lernt man William und seinen Vater kennen, die Weihnachten lieben und dafür oft belächelt werden. Vor allem von Brenda Pein. Sie macht sich über William lustig und steckt die anderen Kinder damit an. Doch auch Brenda hat ein Geheimnis, dass sie vor allen verbirgt. Als William und der Weihnachtosaurus in der Weihnachtsnacht aufeinander treffen, erleben sie zusammen ein unvergessliches Abenteuer. Doch nicht alle gönnen ihnen das Glück, denn auch ein (trauriger)Jäger und sein Hund spielen eine Rolle.

Obwohl es ein Kinderbuch ist,wurde ich (21) von der Geschichte verzaubert. Sie ist so liebevoll und mit so viel Humor geschrieben, dass sie einem ein permanentes Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubert. Besonders toll finde ich, dass William trotz seines Handicaps eine Hauptrolle spielt. Und normal aufwächst. So werden Behinderungen ( vielleicht) für Kinder „normaler“. Auch Mobbing spielt eine große Rolle in der Geschichte und das das ein „ NO –GO „ ist. Ich finde die Geschichte vermittelt Kindern,dass es völlig in Ordnung ist „anders“ zu sein oder an den Weihnachtsmann zu glauben ( Denn wer sagt,das es den nicht gibt?) Und das man manchmal einen langen Streit beenden muss um glücklich zu sein. Das Neid und Mobbing nichts bringt um sich selbst glücklich zu machen.
Diese zuckersüße Geschichte hat 5 Sterne verdient.

This book was just wonderful. It was whimsical, magical, creative, funny, sad and hopeful. Reading this allowed me to glimpse back at how Christmas felt when I was a kid, awaiting the big day with wonder and excitement.
I also loved how the book dealt with a lot of topics (disability, bullying, loss of a loved one, divorce, etc) in such an utterly human way, without sugarcoating them nor over emphasizing them, but rather them being a part of life that we live with.
All in all, it was THE perfect read for Christmas. And also, a DINOSAUR! A CHRISTMASAURUS! If that isn't enough to get you reading this book, I don't know what is.
