I barely remembered this one, but absolutely loved it. This series gets a totally different vibe after the Baudelaires are completely on their own and instead of being bounced around from caretaker to caretaker, have to fend (fully) for themselves.

There isn't a lot for me to say here, but this novel has a lot of highlights: the singing troupe, Babs, the orphans going through all of the records, and the scene with Esme chasing them around the library. And the fire at the climax gives this novel one of the more exciting endings compared to the others.

Upon my rereads, I'd rank each novel as follows:

1. The Austere Academy
2. The Hostile Hospital
3. The Wide Window
4. The Vile Village
5. The Miserable Mill
6. The Ersatz Elevator
7. The Reptile Room
8. The Bad Beginning

Yeesh! That was disturbing.

And cue the PTSD! If these poor children weren't irrevocably traumatized for life already they certainly are now!

I don't know if it's the time I took away from the series or if this book actually is more interesting than the last few (maybe a bit of both?), but I enjoyed reading this instalment. There are still things I don't love, like some repetitive aspects, consistent adult incompetence, and anything to do with Sunny, but I enjoyed the story. I also like the revelations we're getting. It feels like the series is actually making progress. I'll probably be reading the last few books sooner rather than later.

I love how things are starting to come together. I can't wait to find out about certain things.
As with the previous book, I felt so anxious reading this - I don't know how kids are supposed to read these and not be terrified lol
