I enjoyed this book, and found it to be charming and amusing. It's a bite-sized offering into a Viking-age tale, offering adventure, beautiful prose and humour. The names were a little hard to wrap my head around initially but as you read the book you get more and more used to it. The characters while two dimensional propel the story along nicely, and I feel when not taken too seriously this book is a breeze. I agree with what others have stated that it is essentially a rap battle, and a macho-man contest in the end. Nonetheless enjoyable

3/5 as it was oddly comical, but ultimately a poor story.

2 stars because that's the Goodreads rating for "okay". This is very reminiscent of when my mom tries to tell me a story from work: a lot of tangents and a lot of names and backstory to keep track of for very little actual story (sorry mom).

Also I never for a second was able to suspend my belief enough to believe that people ever regarded poetry & poets that highly lmao. (and I say that as someone who does like poetry)

It's cool how authentically Icelandic this is though, a fun little folk tale for sure.

For the most part, it was interesting and that's why I gave it two stars. But the writing style is not really my thing. And my biggest issue was with the too much characters with too hard names and my pigeon brain got confused.

I only read this because I wanted to read something short that was written by an anonymous author.

It was an interesting story and I did like some parts of it. It just didn't blow me away and I probably will not read it again.

At least the challenge is complete now.

Finally Finished!! this book has taken me about 6 weeks and 3 false starts to get finished - Purely due to the saga style of telling the story with every character introduced with not only their name and location but also their parentage and grand-parentage as well as a description and general standing in the community. Also many of the names are repeated through multiple characters / generations just to make an already confusing situation even more so!
In the end I used a note pad and pen and as the story progressed noted every new name and its relationship to the others - dealing with a chapter a night it took me about a week and a half to make it through
