I can't fully give this a four star rating, and here's why.
It's not that I didn't enjoy it in a general manner-- I did, it's just that it was a little hard to sit through at times when it would focus on certain details that I will guess weren't as interesting to me.
This is just a personal grievance, but the wordings and phrases used. I read an updated version of the original text, but it still had outdated wording that was not-so-timely, but that's what happens when you read older texts.

Would I recommend this to a person who wants to start getting into ancient histories or just Rome itself? Absolutely! It does a great job covering the start to end of the empire and the influences other civilizations had on it. And I think it did a good job doing that for someone, me, who hasn't really read on topics like that before.

Although I quite liked the book as a general history of the rise and fall of ancient Rome, I found some small issues. A smattering of historical inconsistencies, typos, and repetitive claims were distracting and took away from the scholarly potential of the book.
