I thought this was an overall pretty cute love story between two different people, but I wouldn’t call it stand out in anyway.

I enjoyed most of the aspects of Of Fire and Stars. The relationship between Denna and Mare was cute and easy to get invested in, despite feeling a bit rushed. I thought the world building was well established early on and was interesting. I enjoyed everything I learned about the world and how it worked, and it was fairly easy to understand.

My biggest issues with the book were mostly poor foreshadowing, weird tonal inconsistencies in scenes, and some actions on the part of the characters that felt unrealistic. I didn’t find any of these particularly egregious though and they didn’t ruin my enjoyment.

Overall it’s a fairly simple fantasy romance that was easy to enjoy.

“My disloyal heart quickened.”

I loved this book three years ago when I first picked it up, and I loved it more still re-reading it now. This was the first LGBTQ+ YA fiction I really read, and I now understand why it has stuck with me for so long.

Mare continues to be one of my favorite book characters, and I quite loved Denna’s character arc as well.

This book has every element I love in YA fantasy - great world building, a touch of magic that isn’t super difficult to understand, strong characters, and a nice paced plot. I love that there’s no homophobia in this book and several sexual orientations represented.

I’m thrilled the sequel is out so I can jump straight to the next chapter for the two leading ladies that stole my heart and cement this book as one of my favorite fantasies (and romances, even though it’s not technically a romance book).
