I was not expecting to like this book so much. I found it hard to follow in the beginning to the point of it almost becoming disinterested. But the more time I gave the book and as our narrator begins to explain pieces to the reader, I got hooked. Suddenly I was on edge each scene and really sympathising for our narrator. It really draws you into its world and its cast of characters. Suddenly, I was sympathizing with Janine when I started off hating her. So glad I decided to push through this!

A terrifying dystopian masterpiece

The handmaid’s tale is a great book! Atwood’s writing style is amazing and I really enjoyed it, although I had trouble sometimes figuring out where we were. That might just have been my brain taking a break though. I’m so sad that I feel like there are so many elements of this book that are relevant in today’s society - it’s really scary! It’s so scary how Gilead came about and we really need to pay attention! I wish I hadn’t seen the tv show before I read the book though, as it made the read different. I feel similarly to when I read 1984 and that is that the book is so depressing! But of course to get the emotions through of the main character. She does have some comedic moments. The ending is a weird one, making the whole book a story within a story sort of. I’ve read this type of ending once before and I don’t hate it. It’s such a well worked through book. Highly recommend it. But be prepared to hate the plot 😂😝
