This isn't really a five-star book, but it gave me five-star feelings, so whatever. I love, love, love Paige. There have been a bunch of comparisons between this series and The Hunger Games, but this series is just so. Much. Better. Everything from its world-building to its proactive main character make it miles better. Paige is one of my favorite YA heroines. I love her. Here I some things I didn't love as much:

1. The Deux ex Machina was killing me. Paige wonders where Senshield's core is? Paige glimpses a handy letter from good ol' Danica, setting Paige on track.

2. Warden is so goddamn boring. I don't understand all this love for him. Paige's friendship with Nick has more chemistry than her romantic relationship with Warden. Eliza and Hari, who's in the book for maybe three (?) chapters, have more chemistry than Paige and Warden. All Warden does is angst around and did I mention his eyes change color?? Because they do, whenever he feeds. It's sooooo hot. And kind of scary because it makes him a m0nSteRRR!!! Paige and Liss have more chemistry. Actually, Paige/Liss 2059. Let's make it happen. Bring Liss back!

3. The side effect of Paige's gift kept varying in intensity depending on what the plot needed.

But things I liked:

1. The "magic" system is fabulous. I love me some intricately detailed, finely mapped out systems of magic.

2. Paige's gift is a lot of fun to read. You can tell Shannon had fun writing it.

3. The Mime Order is precious and I love it.

4. Just everything, man. I really loved this book.

defo my fave out of the three so far. this story really does a good job at holding on to its roots while also reaching for plot. the antagonists make sense with the narrative and themes, and the protagonist keeps a steady personality. the pacing in these books is fantastic.

2023 read:

This series is still just great! As much as I miss the syndicate and “normal” mime-crime, the way this series has progressed to a larger world view and more devastating stakes is just perfect!

Paige remains excellent and brilliant and her character development is on point for a 19 year old. I love that we got to see more of some newer players like Tom and Maria and that we got to see some new places!

The “magic” that started the need for this dystopian world has started playing second fiddle to the oppression of the voyants and their powers weren’t highlighted near as much.

Overall, a great middle book and I’m so excited to read the 2 novellas and the newest book that I’ve never read before!!

It's honestly taken me by surprise how much I enjoyed this. Books 1 and 2 I enjoyed well enough but I wouldn't have called the series a favourite or something I was itching for the sequels of but The Song Rising has me truly invested in both the plot and the characters now. I know my reading taste has matured a lot since I picked The Bone Season up for the first time in 2014 so I think that also factors into why I loved this even more. So good!

Even though it took me awhile to finish this book, it was incredible. I’m going through a lot with planning my cross country move and buying a house, so I actually paused from listening to the book because it was stressing me out when I had enough real life stress. I can’t even begin to really form a well worded thought about this book, but it was so good. Paige is really someone you can’t help but admire and yet scream at for being so honorable. The events in the first book really ripped the blindfold off of her and she’s just been fighting and fighting to fix it ever since. I can’t wait to see what will happen next. .
