Does Santa Exist?: A Philosophical Investigation by Eric Kaplan

I don't think I read the description of this book carefully enough before reading. The title sounds interesting, but I didn't realize that the text was mostly Kaplan discussing philosophy, mystics, and really existential and peripheral topics to Santa. I don't watch The Big Bang Theory, so I think I'm also not exactly the right fan base for Kaplan's writing.

However, I did like Kaplan's conclusion to his titular question. Santa does exist in that he manifests our need to put a face to questions of belief.

I was more excited about the title, than the content inside - and I love philosophy! I was expecting a more humorous read.

He does! I mean, not "Santa," but any of the what-ifs that you wish were true but feel like might not be. They are. Somewhere. Maybe.

This is a wonderful assortment of philosophical ideas, exploring the why of human existence. As a hippie agnostic/sometimes atheist, I found this so comforting and uplifting, so I'm sure some people will find a reason to be offended by it. The philosophy was lovely and well-explained. When I finished I wanted nothing more than to give everything a hug. I mean, as a happy tree hugger (see above) I want that often, but I really really wanted it when I finished this.

Recommend for anybody who is interested in philosophy or wonders at the meaning of life.

I think the point of this book is to make you think. What is the meaning of life? What is knowable and what isn't? Eric Kaplan happens to be one of the writers of The Big Bang, and he brings his humor to bear on the problems he puts forth. So this is a humorous book about metaphysics. Don't let the word metaphysics scare you, this is a very approachable book, with step by step explanations. Recommended for anyone who has ever wondered What is the point?

I'm not sure whether I believe in Santa or not (I want to), but now I have the tools to examine it from this book. Haven't dove into some philosophy in a while, it can be a pretty challenging read.

Surprisingly funny and decent philosophy book, but ending was hippie bullshit.
