I think I had super high hopes going into this as I was looking for recommendations for a new fantasy series to read. I had heard this series is well-loved, “an oldie but a goldie” type book series. Unfortunately, my library only has book 1 in its collection and this didn’t do enough for me to encourage me to go out and purchase book 2 myself in any format.

It wasn’t awful, I found there was more plot than I was expecting. I don’t know tho, for me if you as an author have the opportunity to write a fantasy series - idk why you’d make the werewolves be misogynists by default. I just found the dynamic between the wolves uncomfortable because of that. Despite this, I found the diversity a pleasant surprise in terms of race and sexuality of other characters.

However, the writing didn’t really grip me enough. I finished and thought “oh, alright then.” I also thought Mercy’s “theorising” in the book about what was going on with the plot ended up being too spot on which meant the “grand reveal” fell a bit flat for me.

I also had read this series had romance, I know this is book 1 but there was basically zero. So just go in knowing that bc I didn’t.

My New Favorite Series

Amazing character development with a solid plot. Mercy is the heroine I've always wanted. She's not the strongest but her intelligence and boldness are all she needs.

Although it's only a max of 5% (glimpses and kisses) romance, the story was interesting.  Each character has clear strengths and weaknesses and they're forced to rely on each other to get the job done. It allowed them to organically draw the plot along. It was a fun adventure.

Loved it for what it is, finished it in one day. Can't wait to read the rest.

I went into this book semi-interested n by page 40-something a whole lot of nothing interesting has happened. This may be attributed to world building n character development dragging or perhaps I'm just not into weres. I guess I'll go with both?

Mercy was fun. She has a plight to find her place. She doesnt just sit down and take it, but shes not as kick butt female as some other series have. The lore was explained well. It was familiar enough to know there were werewolves, but original enough to be interesting.

I loved it less the second time around, the who-done-it reveal at the end is too forced with it's Sherlockness of "Oh, and then they did this because...", "Oh, that makes sense because..." It's a weak point of the book and I skimmed a lot of the book on the second reading. But overall it was still enjoyable. I like Mercy, I like that it's not all sex scenes and is mostly plot/action driven, if you're looking for smut this probably isn't your gal. She's my fav and gets points for her Lamb necklace, I think it's a cool detail and her faith fleshes her out a bit as a character in a market saturated with pagan or witchy protagonists. All in all, good second read, but probably not worth a third reread. On to the next one.
