It is hard to imagine not loving a book illustrated by Kadir Nelson. His oil paintings are so rich and beautiful. The text that he has written to accompany the artwork in this book describes the life of Nelson Mandela in a poetic way that will be a great introduction for students to the story of his life. Great for helping students compare the history of segregation in the United States to that of other countries.

This book does not convey information about apartheid or Mandela's struggles, but the illustrations are gorgeous.

Kadir Nelson is an excellent artist. I absolutely love his art. I looked for a way to describe it and Nelson says it best, “I feel that art’s highest function is that of a mirror, reflecting the innermost beauty and divinity of the human spirit; and is most effective when it calls the viewer to remember one’s highest self. I choose subject matter that has emotional and spiritual resonance and focuses on the journey of the hero as it relates to the personal and collective stories of people." He is also a fantastic author.

The illustrations in this book are so stunning that my nine month old daughter loves to just stare at the front cover, touch the parts of his face, and then kiss his lips. I think she thinks it's a real person.

Kadir Nelson's illustrations are always 5 stars, but the biography was only 3 because it just was too bare-boned for me. I wanted more.
