DNF at 20%. I wanted to like this, but the writing style was so jarring. Writing in first person present and addressing the second protagonist as "you" is an interesting stylistic choice but it feels like I'm reading self-insert and it's too difficult to get into.

[A SHORT SPOILER]

I’m sorry but the tone and word structure is terrible. The tone is boring and does not have any emotion at all. As for the word structure, it's like as if the author is trying to make it very literature-y and it turned out so bad. The whole story is boring and I sometimes think to myself, what's the purpose of this book? What's the theme? Why was it written in the first place? IK we read books for leisure but c’mon what is this? Reading the acknowledgement at the end, baffled me so much. Also, I don't understand why Mya is referred as ‘you’ bcs by the end, a sneak peak for the 2nd book, it's from Mya’s POV, she doesn't refer Kol as ‘you’. I don't see the purpose of making Kol addresses Mya as ‘you’ while Mya addresses as ‘Kol’.

I give this a 3⭐ bcs even though it's boring, it doesn't makes me fully frustrated w/ the books. However, speaking of emotions, not only the tone and word structure is boring, the characters as well. Kol and Mya are boring. Especially Kol, his character doesn't have any empathy or feelings at all. He's written as an ignorant character but my god, he's doesn't have any social que at all.
Like when he went to visit Lo after knowing the truth and confronted her abt it like what?
I also don't feel any chemistry between them. Lo is boring as well but at least her character is a little interesting. Even the world building is not very building bcs it's boring.

Throughout the book, I thought to myself, what would I write the plot of this book bcs it doesn't have any?

This review and many more can be found on my blog: Feed Your Fiction Addiction

When I heard that a YA prehistoric fantasy was coming out, I was ready to jump on board – this book sounded like it would be right up my alley! And it was – I thought it was a fun read, but I just felt like it was lacking something that would make it really special.

What Fed My Addiction:

Prehistoric times.
Yep, this book took place sometime shortly after mankind made its way out of caves. We got to see interesting details (or, at least imaginings) about the clans and the way they worked and what it would be like to live in a time when it was truly man against nature (and nature often won). Then, of course, there were wooly mammoths and such. The setting was definitely my favorite part of the book!

Kol.
I liked Kol, the main character of the book. I felt for the poor guy, who saw his chance at a life leading his clan slipping through his fingers because of the lack of a mate. (His clan didn’t have any females his age and there was only one nearby clan, which they, unfortunately, didn’t have a good history with). I also liked his complex relationships with all of the members of his family – his younger brother, who bests him at most everything, and his parents, who dote on him but worry about the future of their clan if Kol can’t find someone to marry.

Second person.
The book is told from Kol’s perspective, but he’s telling the story to Mya – she’s injured and he’s trying to keep her awake and conscious. So, the story is told in first/second person (he’d say I when he was referring to himself and you when he’s referring to Mya). I actually really liked this POV – it was something new and different, and I thought that the fact that he was telling the story to Mya added a new dimension to it because he was explaining how he felt about things as they occurred (including her!).

Clan wars.
The best part of this book was the relationships between the clans and how they went (very) south. The ending of the book was pretty exciting because that’s when the conflicts really kicked into high gear!

What Left Me Wanting More:

Just generally wanted more.
I don’t know why, but I just generally felt like I wanted more from this book. When I was a teenager, I read the Clan of the Cave Bear series, which I remember as being so incredibly rich with complexities the prehistoric setting – it was hard for me not to compare this book to that series (perhaps unfairly, since it’s been many years since I’ve read the series). While I loved the prehistoric details of this book, I just didn’t feel completely immersed in the setting for some reason.

The romance.
I also wanted more when it came to the romance – it was fine, but I never really found myself terribly invested in Kol and Mya as a couple. If they weren’t the only options for each other, I don’t know that they would have really wanted to be together – and Mya was so aloof for such a long time that I just couldn’t understand why Kol was drawn to her at all. Once I heard her story (which was relatively predictable), it was somewhat understandable why she acted the way she did, but I still just didn’t see why Kol would be all that interested in her – except for the fact that she was the only woman he could marry. I guess there was that. By the end, I was a bit more behind the relationship, but it took me a long time to get there. And since a lot of the book was about who Kol was going to marry, I guess that made me not love it as much as I wanted to.

Overall, I felt like this was a good read, if not a great one. I’ll probably read the next in the series to see how it progresses – I have high hopes that the next book will truly sweep me up in the setting and the conflicts between the clans!

I didn’t overtly dislike anything about this book, but it was a bit lackluster.

The concept of a pre-historic romance is pretty cool, and the tense used was unusual. The main character is telling the story to another character, so it’s something like “I saw you standing there” etc.

On the other hand, the pacing was pretty slow and certain plotlines felt a bit underdeveloped.

OMG!

Why did this take me so long to read? Way too many books out there man.
Was I living under a rock for 26 years? Probably.
Do I suck? Yeah, I do. Stop working. Start reading. Forever. Have no friends. Have books.

Ivory and Bone was such a good book. Quick and easy read. Enjoyable. Definitely kept my interest the entire time.

I'm going to try so hard not to spoil anything.. but uh.. no promises.

Okay, so there's romance - obviously. I also shipped like two couples and one of them just burned into ashes. I didn't really care because the other couple was basically breathing oxygen into me. I worshiped them. The ending was amazing. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Things I liked about this book: clans, war, fantastic characters, horrible characters, wonderful story, back stabbing, death plots, and so much freaking more.

Kol was probably my favorite character. As well as Mya. However, there is Pek who was just so freaking funny. There were some scary scenes were people almost died. There were actual scenes were people did die. People I didn't like were fickle and the other people I hated, well.. they died.

I couldn't put this book down - it was just that interesting. However, I feel like it took me 85 years to type up BR comments and my actual review. I'm sorry!!! I completely forgot that I read this book for some odd reason. I blame the migraines, wine, and work. Mostly the migraines though.

Overall, love this book. Again, I can't wait for the second book to be in my hands (I think that's like the third time I've said that??). I recommend this book to literally EVERYONE.

Seriously, stop whatever you are doing and go get this book. Read it. Love it. You're welcome!

2.5 stars.

I would call Ivory and Bone a very timid book - nothing exciting or dramatic really happens.
Spoiler There is no real sadness - no one dies except the bad guys - which I suppose is a nice change
