I think the first 90% of this was really well written, but the last 10 pages were so rushed. It’s crazy how much happened then - I feel like we could have extended the story a little bit.

That being said, this is a great entry convo to race and class in America. I think this is perfect for both younger and older audiences.

Co-written by the one and only Alicia Keys and Andrew Weiner, and illustrated by Brittney Williams, Girl of Fire is a YA graphic novel about Lolo Wright, a incredibly smart black girl from the projects, who finds out she has a super power. AND pretty much her song "Girl on Fire" has been an ear worm since I picked it up (how's that for some clever marketing).

Set amidst the stark realities of prejudice from police and gang violence, this graphic novel tackles a number of hard hitting subjects. Her brother is subjected to racial profiling by police called to a robbery, which is the event that awakens her new found abilities. Her hard-working father is targeted by the gangs demanding protection money. And Lolo must find a way to use her new found abilities to save the people she loves the most.

The illustrations are amazing - I was entirely engrossed by the depictions by Williams, absolutely fantastic, vibrant action. The storyline is tough as the challenges faced by the characters aren't made up at all. My main critique is I wanted a bit more (maybe a sequel is planned) as there is a bit of mystery around one of the characters. This is incredibly fast paced and I did feel like I would have liked a bit more character development. All in all though, I think this is a great graphic novel for mature young readers.

Thank you to Harper Collins for providing me a copy of this graphic novel for an honest review.

i really wanted to like this but it was just way too fast paced for me i think? like nothing was really explained that well and it didn’t really feel like you even got to know the characters that well either. i just wasn’t a fan of it, personally i guess im more into character driven & plot driven books and this wasn’t that unfortunately but it definitely wasn’t bad! :/
(not rating bc i don’t feel it deserves a bad one)
