The reason I put "it's complicated" for diversity is because despite the fact this book embraces Bobby Drake's sexuality and teases Kitty as not being straight, it completely erased his and Kitty's Judaism, particularly egregious with Kitty who for quite some time was the only open, proudly heroic Jewish character in comics. I would love to give Marauders a higher rating, but especially with the way issue eleven went (not included in this trade, but a further continuation of this behavior)  I can't, even though the writing is stellar and the characterizations (save for the aforementioned santization of everything related to Judaism) are thoughtful.

Why is it that any revelations about a character's sexuality always come at the cost of their racial and religious identities? It's a worrying trend in comics that I'm tired of seeing. It's a shame that Marvel, and the comics industry in general, seems incapable of balancing more than two minority traits at a time- Bobby Drake as a gay Jewish man and Kitty Prydeman as a queer Jewish woman have so much storytelling potential. But Marvel continues to be run by cowards ignoring the Jewish legacy of the very creators that started their entire business.
