Philosophers kind of book has never been in my forte but this one was a good read. This was such a bleak, depressing, and deeply unsettling book. It really made you think about, well; Hell, Heaven, and the existence of God. This was an okay short read, a horror that was packed in something that felt fresh and original. It was worth the try.

I've never read The Library of Babel, the short story on which this novel is based, nor had I ever heard of Zoroastrianism, although I have now read the Wikipedia pages of both naturally. I thought at first that the author had probably left the Mormon church, but no, he is apparently still an active member and a professor at BYU.
As a short book, this one is very succinct in its storytelling; if anything it could have been a bit longer to allow for a little more character development. The latter third or so felt a tad rushed. It was entertaining, however. I also found it sad. It reminded me a bit of Piranasi.
{library, Kindle}

This is a story on hopelessness taken to a level and depth I had never fully comprehended before. I don't remember the last time - or if there even was a time - when I read a book that filled me with such dread. This was creative and well-written and utterly terrifying to think of. Hell here is not the traditional physical torment and torture for all eternity commonly depicted in society, but a structured setup with a goal that is so difficult to reach that it feels impossible. Hell is pointlessness - in the inevitable monotomy of the same things over and over and loss of meaning to what we once held dear.
