A great introduction for young kids on what it means to be transgender, and most importantly, how to be a good friend to someone who is.

Such an important book. “a gentle story about gender and friendship” and that’s just what this book is. Without theatrics it tells the story of a bear that wants to be different and doesn’t feel comfortable with the roles assigned.

Review Taken From The Pewter Wolf

Errol and Thomas the teddy bear are best friends and play together every day. But one morning, Thomas is sad and Errol is worried. Even the swings at the park cheer Thomas up. Thomas has a secret that he wants to share, but it's difficult to say and he's scared Errol won't want to be his friend anymore...

Not going to say more, as this is quite a hard and yet easy book to review. This is a picture book and it's wonderful. It's charming and heart-warming and all that goodness that tackles issues little ones need to know such as acceptance, friendship and being true to yourself.

I fear this book might upset some parents as it tackles an LGBT theme (won't say what, but some parents might feel it's unacceptable for their child), but I think every child should read this. The world is a dark place at the moment, and we need a little more love, tolerance and acceptance.

I know this isn't much of a review. Like I said earlier on, this is a hard book to review and yet, remarkably easy. It's simply charming and heart-warming.

It was a sweet story for young kids to show that's it's ok if you don't recognize yourself with the gender assigned at your birth. This time the author used the hero's teddy bear to show the reader how to be a good ally to your friends facing the same journey.

The illustrations by Dougal MacPherson were sweet and simple. I especially liked that my eBook was presented it like a mix of story book/audiobook, with a narrator reading the story, the text changing color and the pages turning as he goes. So that young readers can read this book on their own. It makes the reading even more interactive. The author, Jessica Walton, is a queer, disabled writer and speaker, so it's really nice to see such representation.

I've read this book as part of the #TransRightsReadathon (20-27th march 2023).

I really like that this book shows a kid transitioning, and the other kids behaving well instead of giving her a hard time.

The story certainly lives up to its subtitle. It is sweet, gentle, simple and is a wonderful book to use as a conversation starter to kids about what it means to be transgender.
