Blurring the lines between fiction and non-fiction through the stories passed on in her family history, Kim Coleman Foote creates a biomythology in this novel that stretches decades of the Coleman-Grimes genealogy. Written almost like a collection of short stories through the 1920’s-80’s, this book is a haunting yet redeeming narrative of the Coleman legacy as it looks to redefine the way we see the traumas of our past and how understanding it can prevent the cycle from continuing.

This was my first biomythography. Parts of the story were rich and sad and emotional, but overall it was hard for me to keep up with all of the characters despite the family tree. Some sections were in 2nd person, and unless someone spoke to that person by name, you were unsure of who the section was about.
