F*ck Gra' Coleman
All my homies hate Gra' Coleman!!

In the author's note, the author says she learned more about her great-grandmother's past that helped her to empathize with her, but I did not feel that way. Her constant and rampant abuse of everyone around her, but especially Bertha, was impossible to justify.

I loved this book and thought it was so well written and was really inspired by the biomythography concept. I do wish we heard more from Bertha and her siblings towards the end of the book. I really liked Nell and wanted to know where she ended up.

This book was such a force. It’s a biomythography, a term created by Audre Lorde that describes this mixture of history, biography and myth. The story unfurls over generations, and the reader  experiences the ups and downs of a traumatized people whose experiences are inextricably linked with violence. Coleman tells this story with an unflinching empathy. She does not make excuses for the violence, for the neglect, for the ways that people who were raised under these conditions continue to pass them on with little reflection. She holds space for the darkness and fallibility, and does so with clear love for her flawed family. This book will stick with me for a while.
