I think it is very unfair that Larkin is not considered one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, his style is, in my opinion, one of the best to start with poetry. The topics covered are basically human condition and therefore universal.
the most outstanding without any particular order:

To the Sea
This Be The Verse
Sympathy in White Major
The Trees
Forget What Did

Oh, Larkin, you sad, sad bastard. Sometimes I wanted to tell you to chin up, but other times I was right there with you, wallowing.

Favorite poems in the collection included:

"Church Going"
"Homage to a Government"
"Ignorance"
"Myxomatosis"
"Next, Please"
"No Road"
"Sunny Prestatyn"
"The Old Fools"
"This Be the Verse"

I loved this book. It was the first time I have really appreciated the genius and breadth of his poetry. His work contains so many ‘killer lines’ that stop you in your tracks and demand to be read and reread and marvelled at.
WONDERFUL.

Philip Larkin is the best. There are other poets who approach his level of brilliance, bu none who surpasss him when their body of work is compared with his. I was most pleased when one of my mentors allowed me to copy a tape of a Larkin reading--it gives one an entirely different perspective to hear him read...
