I really enjoyed this playful and in some ways tongue in cheek book. The characters were fun, and the era has an aura of mystery about it. The idea alone of an American ex-pat in a foreign country on the eve of WWII is interesting on its own and then when you add the complexity of the Japanese culture and the flow this book has, it makes it that much more enjoyable.

This book shifts between three time periods linking them with Harry Niles, a very good conman who can never manage to tell the truth.

Quite a good read.

Not sure how I feel about this book... on the one hand I like the strangeness and surreal quality that paints the 40s japan but at the same time the story is too long and has too much going on for it to make any sense. So a confused 3 stars
