re-read via audio.

Beyond a slight quibble with the inconsistency in Will's mild southern accent between the two narrators, I loved loved loved Chick Magnet on audio. Just a thoroughly gorgeous book, that while Sad™ is also gloriously romantic, and at the end, uplifting. I know I initially reviewed this as being a great way to handle the pandemic, and I will revise that statement to say that I truly don't envy contemporary romance writers the task of what do with our ongoing pandemic state. the pandemic is NOT over as of 2023, but looking around me the world is acting like it is. So, I'm a little torn, but how does one try to cover the dissonance in fiction? truly a hard ask, and i appreciate the effort to try, even if that might not succeed for all readers. I am going to choose to believe this book is set in a time when the pandemic has faded, although not in the minds or financial // real world realities for our protagonists.

i purchased the audio on my own AND will receive an advance copy for reviewing for Library Journal.

what can i say a sad boy veterinarian with a heart of gold but grumpy and depressed about his failing business is my catnip. add in a sparky chicken 'influencer' who's horrid ex gaslit her into stardom, then flung her away for a new, shiny and you've got all the mix-ins for a perfect contemporary romance.

I loved this a whole lot. so much so i'm struggling to put it into words? I have a print arc and i need to sit and soak it all in, again.

Also THIS was an amazing way to include our current world. This is a world where the pandemic is ebbing, but has really ruined someone's tenuous business, and spirit, but Barry does an amazing job stitching it all up into a hopeful, but not falsely positive HEA for all.

ALSO SO SEXY. Chick Nick and those shorts? Go get it.

CW: pandemic references, depression, animals that are hurt/in danger, descriptions of putting animals asleep, animal injuries, grief to animals lost during procedures (all of this is off page, but thought about). Hurt chicken (she lives).

Thank you to the author for the print ARC and Netgalley for the eARC.

The cover almost kept me from picking this up at the library. But the description of the heroine made me read on and give it a shot. Within the first few pages the author’s turn of phrase had me rereading a few sentences just to appreciate her insight and perfect word choice. The people in this book were real, flawed, and had actual character growth. They were also charming and made you root for them. I laughed out loud in a couple of places and my heart clenched in a few others. Bottom line: This was a good story and was an enjoyable read. (And I think I’ll check out Emma Barry’s other titles.)

This was so fun and cute to read. A perfect read during a very rough time in my life. I can't wait for this to come out in 2023!!!

Chick Magnet is a cute small town/grumpy x sunshine book, which I enjoyed a lot. It is dual POV, but written in third person which is not my favourite. I still found the book quite easy to read and the story was great. I loved the vulnerability in this book, especially in Will.

Nicole was also amazing and really stood up for both herself and Will, even though she’s been through a lot.

The book is set in a post COVID world, and deals with a lot of problems that are realistic in the world today which I think was written well - but not my favourite to read.

I really liked this book and enjoyed the story, but it there are some things that just weren’t 100% for me.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book.

I love Emma Barry's writing so much, and it was so lovely to have another book from her. She always manages to write romances that tackle nuanced, relevant issues so well. Both Will and Nic were wonderful people, and I loved the community of the small town. I also love the realistic way several hard things played out.

Nic and Will are both trying to pick up the pieces from their respective "failures," with varying levels of how public those failures are and what it means to own them. I loved that this was a story about real people facing the kinda of real situations I talk about with my friends, and there's no magic in how it all gets fixed. And it's still lovely and romantic and sweet and hot and true at the same time.

This is only the third book I've read that acknowledges that the pandemic existed and we endured it. Lockdown etc... is discussed in hindsight, and helps to pin this story to a definite setting. I appreciated that Barry didn't ignore Covid as a Major Cultural Event.

I read this book in one sitting and I did not want it to end. i loved Nic and Will, what's not to love about a surly veterinarian? This was my first Emma Barry book but it definitely won't be my last. I wasn't thrilled when I realized COVID-19 was mentioned but the story and the characters and story made up for that in my opinion.

this book is a fun small town romance featuring a chicken influencer named Nicole and the grumpy veterinarian next door named Will.

this book was sooo cutee!! let’s just start off with the fact it has chickens, not gonna lie i never thought about chickens much but this book made me LOVE THEM!! and the fact that will adopts a kitten, it was too cute to handle. i didn’t expect to honestly love this romance as much as i did, it was definitely different than anything else i’ve read. I especially loved how this book showed the struggling of someone who owns a business after covid and how the affects their mental health. that’s so important to me!!

This was really cute, sweet, and slightly steamy. I think I’ve unlocked a fave mini trope, where the MMC interacts with baby animals because swooooon. 4.5 Stars.
