"I wish/there'd been a warning, a scare, a chance/to show more love, to change/the course of events."
This is a book about loss, grief and love. As we all have a very different relationship with these things, and this poetry collection is at its heart a truly personal journey, I think all readers will have very different reactions to this. There is a chance you will recognise nothing of yourself in it, or everything.
I will confess that many of the references passed me by, but I am not the same age, nationality or of the same experience as the author, so this really isn't particularly surprising.
There were several lines in the book, however, that hit home for me so completely that they made me take a breath. That is the beauty of poetry, I find. It expresses your emotions and most inarticulate profundities back to yourself in a suddenly expressed form. It makes you feel less alien in your experience. The line I quoted at the top was the one that got me the most -because I think of this often. I think of it in relation to those I have lost unexpectedly, but more in regards to those for whom I did, or do, have a warning. Because when you love someone, it is never enough. It never allows you enough, that warning.
